EDUC 5333 Week 5 Blog

  1. Discuss your progress on the digital story.  What is your plan to be prepared to share your story during the 7th week of class?  What do you need assistance with?

For my digital story, I'm going to share my personal journey of recovering from a really bad motorcycle accident that almost cost me my life. I want to use my experience to show just how dangerous texting and driving can be, by opening up about all the emotional and physical struggles I went through. It was not easy. My hope is that people won't just know the risks, but they'll actually feel the impact through a really honest and heartfelt story.

To get ready for my final presentation, I'm planning to:

1. Finish up my script, so my story becomes more riveting for people to want to read it with a good flow.

2. To organize the highlights of my story, and set up appropriate visuals that will help people to take an interest in my story.

3. Make sure to record my narration so that the tone and pacing of my voice is fit to deliver a powerful message.

  • Practice my transitions and timing so everything is clear and keeps the audience engaged from start to finish.

Right now, I could really use some help picking out the best visuals to make my story even stronger, and also making sure the digital storytelling software works perfectly. In the end, I truly hope my story sticks with people and encourages them to make safer choices when they are driving.

  1. Review the resources for this week and discuss potential application tools for the production of your story or use with students in your classroom.

I'm planning to use Canva for my digital story, mainly because it has some really great templates that are perfect for storyboards and visual layouts.

I'm planning to use Canva for my digital story, mainly because it has some really great templates that are perfect for storyboards and visual layouts. I like using Leonardo AI because it creates the Pixar-style 3D characters I need for the scenes in my Canva slides. Adding sound effects, music and my narration to my story telling will help the audience connect with it by making it come to life.

These tools will not only be helpful, but crucial when I present my final story. They will allow me to use my own narrative to tell what will hopefully be a convincing and powerful story. I am confident that these tools will allow students to use multimedia storytelling tools to get creative, and reflect on their own experiences they want to share in class.

3. In preparation for the Digital Storytelling in your Community Assignment due next week.  Discuss the following:

  • Who is the authentic audience for your story?  Who will be impacted by it?  In what ways might this story resonate with this audience?

  • What skills and knowledge have you developed as you create your story?

  • How might your community/students be impacted by engaging in digital storytelling?  What role can you play?

Who I'm Trying to Reach & Why It Matters

My digital story is really for my classmates and teachers, but I also hope my students might see it. I'm sharing my personal journey of recovery and the serious risks of texting and driving. I believe this message will hit home for anyone who's gone through tough times or knows someone impacted by dangerous driving. The story is all about bouncing back, healing emotionally, and making smarter choices, which I hope will really resonate with viewers and make them think about their own decisions.

Creating this story helped me improve my skills. I learned how to write a clear, engaging script and use story maps to plan and organize my ideas better. I figured out how to weave in digital elements like AI-generated images, audio, and sound effects. I also learned how to make the story more emotionally engaging through pacing and design. These skills have shown me how to combine personal experiences with powerful multimedia storytelling.

Connecting with My Community

Digital storytelling can really build empathy and connections in my community. Sharing this with my students could lead to some great conversations about being safe, making good choices, and supporting each other.

When I help them create their own digital stories, they learn to express themselves, build confidence, and think more carefully about the media they use. My job is to show them how storytelling can make a difference—and give them the tools to share their own stories in a meaningful way. Digital storytelling can really build empathy and connections in my community.

  1. Hello Bradley,

I really appreciate you sharing your story, especially because it focuses on such an important yet often neglected topic: texting and driving. I’m glad to know that you have recovered from this incident and that you now want to create awareness about how dangerous it can be when we don’t pay attention on the road.
One of my own family members was seriously injured because of a careless young driver who wasn’t paying attention. Fortunately, he survived. Because of that experience, I believe your story is truly impactful, and it will be very educational and thought-provoking, especially for students who are just beginning their driving journeys. Thank you for sharing!

  3. Hey Bradley, your story sounds really interesting. I agree about script, finding a solid flow can be really hard. I feel like I struggle with having each of the pieces of the story structure stand apart while also feeling like they are part of a whole story. I love the idea of sharing this with your students. Reminding them we are humans can be powerful, especially with older students.
